The Madonna and Child – If you’ve never heard this phrase, it refers to a scene of Mary and her infant son, Jesus. It is a revered subject matter through centuries of art history. There are countless depictions of the Blessed Mother and her Son, Jesus, and for good reason.
The Madonna and Child is a relationship that is the epitome of faith, love and sacrifice. There is no better example for us. Despite her circumstances, Mary faithfully said, “Let it be done unto me according to God’s will,” and she was blessed with the most amazing of gifts, the gift of becoming the Mother of God.
While Mary is our perfect example, everyday we see imperfect women (and the men in their lives) who have faithfully responded to His call and lovingly said yes to His plan for their lives. With “The Madonna and Child Project”, I am saying my own small ‘yes’ to allow God to speak through my work.
Given the name “The Madonna and Child Project,” you can guess that the emphasis of the project will be on documenting women in their role as mother.
The most obvious would be as a familial mother (for example, a foster mother caring for a special needs child). But the idea is larger than that. Of equal importance will be those women who take on the role of spiritual and emotional motherhood (Ex: a woman who devotes her spare time in service to others). These documentary stories will be stories of faith, love, and sacrifice. (As a side note: Just as St. Joseph is an integral part of the Holy Family, we cannot forget about the faithful men, who have equally responded to God’s will, who will also be featured in many of the stories.)
As you are reading this, if you immediately thought of a woman, or family, who exemplifies this type of sacrificial love, please get in touch with me. Tell them about this project and help them get in touch with me. I am ready to say ‘yes’ and document their story.
While I would love to take on every story that comes my way, I am taking on this project in my own time and at my own cost. Therefore, I am going to turn it all to God in prayer and allow Him to give me direction about which stories need to be told.
Curious about the project’s name?
The name “Madonna and Child Project” itself was actually suggested to me by a Catholic mom who runs a baby naming blog, called Sancta Nomina. I had asked her to help me brainstorm a name for a women’s ministry that I had been thinking of starting. As it turns out, when trying discern God’s path for me, there was a loooong, winding road which has gotten me to this place. I don’t know what will become of the women’s ministry. Maybe it’s down the road. But for now, the name is staying for this entirely different type of ministry. Thank you Sancta Nomina for the name! And if you happen to be in need of some baby naming help, check out her blog.
Saint Veronica, please pray for this project.
