So here’s a true story about me to help illustrate why you should skip the mall studio and invest in a custom photo session with a professional photographer.
When my second child was born, I wanted a nice photo of the two of them for our Christmas card. But photographing your own kids dressed up and posed is tough work. Add to that, I was exhausted with a 2 month old, and I was not up for the challenge. So I scheduled a spot at the mall! (gasp! Yep, I did it) I just wanted one quick photo for my Christmas card! Luckily, I didn’t spend much money, because I truly got what I paid for.
The “photographer” (read: camera technician who literally just presses a button) took only 8 photos! My son was 2 months old and couldn’t sit, and my 2.5 year old daughter couldn’t really hold him. The “photographer” didn’t know what to do with him, so she plopped him in some sort of basket seat thingy with pillows under him. It was awkward and all the photos angled up his nose. How flattering. Anyway, we got one decent photo for our cards, and printed a couple for the grandparents, but definitely nothing I was really satisfied with.
Fast forward to last summer:
The kids were now 2 and 4 and easier to work with. We were on a beach vacation with close friends. I was doing a session for them and in return had them assist me in shooting my own family portraits. We went out at golden hour (that hour before sunset when the light is gorgeous and flattering). We planned our outfits. Everything was thought out and executed with a professional eye. Now, I have a beautiful 24×36” canvas of our family portrait hanging in our front living room. (You can see that photo on my About page.)
Granted, I didn’t pay for my own family session, but the end product is what a paying client would receive. I have an heirloom showpiece, capturing a wonderful moment in our lives, hanging in my house. That memory itself is invaluable, and it is not something you can get at a mall studio.
Stay tuned for another post explaining what goes into the pricing of a custom photo sessions.
