A couple weeks ago I photographed a first birthday party, but this party was not your typical birthday celebration. The birthday boy is half Korean and his family was throwing him a Korean DOL. I learned that in the Korean culture the first birthday is a huge celebration with a unique traditional ceremony. The ceremony involves a small table set with different items and each item has a meaning. The birthday child chooses an item and that item foretells his future. A bowl of rice is for health; a pencil means he’ll be a scholar; yarn is long life; money is wealth; a ball means he’ll be an athlete and a stethoscope is a doctor. You can see in the images below which item Mason chose.
But since Mason is only half Korean, this party also included a traditional birthday cake and song, and was held at a great local Italian restaurant, Aroma Osteria. The decor at this party was absolutely beautiful and well coordinated by a party planner. And the cake looked unbelievable! Every detail was thought out, which was fun to photograph.
So here’s to you Mason. Happy Birthday!!
