This past weekend I had the opportunity to photograph my first Hudson Valley wedding held at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. It was a fantastic experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding to shoot as the lead photographer.
Annie and Mike, and their family and friends, are totally laid back and fun-loving. With this group I knew I’d have the chance to get lots of fun candid photos, which the bride really wanted. Both the bride and groom also each have children, who were in the wedding. What photographer doesn’t get excited to grab cute photos of kids in weddings!? And while Annie had requested some family portraits, the couple wanted them to be natural and less posed than a more traditional wedding, which allowed for true emotions to be captured.
Of course, like with any event or portrait session, it’s good to expect the unexpected and realize that you can never plan for everything. Every time I have a session, I try to learn at least one thing from the experience. The lesson from this wedding – be flexible and go with the flow. Even though we had a schedule for the day, it quickly went out the window as we waited for the minister to arrive, squeeze in a rehearsal and then get dressed all in one hour before the scheduled start time!!
I couldn’t wait to get their photos uploaded and start editing. I created a group of highlights from the day that I’m really happy with. And there are some gems that I just know the bride and groom will love.
So how did I do? Was my first Hudson Valley wedding a success? Please leave me a comment – I would love the feedback. And if you know someone getting married, I would love for you to share this post! Thanks in advance.
