Not Sure if You Want to Invest in Printed Portraits From Your Photographer?
Here’s a story to help explain why you should:
When my husband and I were married 10 years ago, digital was just coming into the mainstream (I was in photography school and everyone was still using film), so our wedding photographer also used film. We negotiated that we would get possession of the negatives (the equivalent of a buying a digital package today). We figured that I had access to all the necessary equipment, so I could print our portraits myself. And guess what? I’ve only ever printed 2 from our whole wedding!!!! Luckily, we got an album as part of our package because we love looking back at those photos with the kids now.
I tell you this story to emphasize the importance of buying printed products from your photographer.
Digital images are not enough!
- The majority of us will never take the time to get those photos printed. Life is too busy to sit down and get this done. BUT, professional photographers provide this service for you. You are investing your hard earned money in a professional photo session for a reason – to remember this moment in time. If you purchase printed portraits, canvases or albums from your photographer right after your session, you will never regret it. So, make use of our time and expertise and enjoy those photos when they are delivered!
- On a more practical note, by only purchasing digital files, you are putting yourself at risk of losing them in a few years – computers die, files get corrupted, USB drives get lost. Digital files are great to have, especially as back up, but don’t rely on them to be there forever. Don’t take my word for it. Read what a Google exec has to say.
- Many people feel that if they have the digital files, they can save a few bucks and get them printed at their local big box store. I really wouldn’t recommend doing this. Think about how much you are investing in your session for your photographer’s expertise, quality and attention to detail. Big box stores offer none of those things and you will be disappointed in the end product. In an upcoming post, I will compare images from my professional printer to some from the big box stores. Wait until you see the difference!
