My parents love to say that as a child I would sit and observe everything going on around me. I would hardly speak until I had gathered enough information and then blurt out everything I had seen and heard. What I find interesting about this is that I AM STILL THAT WAY! Not in a weird, antisocial sort of way, but I LOVE people watching, learning things from others, and observing this amazing world of ours.
I have found that I have a unique ability to see things that others may not slow down enough to see, to notice a special moment happening, to understand others and then translate those observations into a photograph. This trait has definitely led me to becoming a photographer.
I have a photo, taken during one of my undergrad classes, of my grandmother. For most of my teens until her death at age 100, she lived only a mile away. One day she came over to wash her car in my parents’ driveway. So there she is in her late 80s, pants rolled up, hose in hand washing her super cool Mercury. I quietly walked up behind her with camera in hand, and she yells at me! That’s the moment I click the shutter. When I look at his photo, I can actually still hear her yelling “Oooooo, Alexandra!” This is not the kind of image that’s going to win any technical awards, but boy, does it make me laugh.
I don’t think photography gets better than that – when an image has meaning, creates an emotional connection, and can evoke a memory years later.
I have come to realize, through my 15-year journey with photography, this is what MY images need to be – A document of life, in all its beautiful realness. The little details and the big picture, the quiet times and the raucous laughter, every moment is precious.
Thanks for taking time to read about me. I have plenty more stories and photos that I’d like to share with you on my blog. I share them for a couple reasons –
- To help you get to know me
- It gives you intimate knowledge about what drives me to create images
- To understand my vision when creating special images for your family
- To help you envision the endless possibilities for your own session
- AND To inspire you to document your days
